Organizational Climate of Alienation and Fear
Superiors must understand if the climate of alienation and fear persist for a longer period, it will lead to antagonistic culture. Many wonder how to recognize whether or not climate of fear and alienation permeate in the organization. The following are some of the characteristics of alienated climate:
- Employees look for excuses to absent from the meeting. One of the reasons that they do not consider meetings productive.
- Employees prefer to be silent than to speak because they have apprehensions that their opinions that may not correspond with the superior(s).
- If asked, they will respond in minimum possible words because of the fear of retaliation of the superior.
- Employees avoid giving critical evaluation to the superiors’ views because they feel that they will not be respected.
- Employees avoid making suggestions or sharing ideas because they feel it is a futile activity.
- They keep a low profile and avoid interaction with the superior.
- They have critically low trust on superiors
